Building strong foundations

At American, we use our scale and connections within the communities that we service to influence widespread charitable action through direct philanthropic contributions. American’s foundations work to provide funding in areas that form the building blocks of stable community: infrastructure, education and family.

The Community Foundation provides grants to nonprofit organizations that join in supporting the causes that align with the airline’s charitable efforts. The Community Foundation offers both multi-year and one-time grants that help with hard costs (building and construction) for projects critical to carrying out the missions of local and national nonprofit organizations.

The Education Foundation supports scholarships for dependents of employees and awards grants to nonprofit organizations to support children’s educational programs. With a focus on funding children’s educational programs that prepare for a future educated workforce, American hopes to work with both local and national organizations to assist children’s drive to achieve higher education in the aviation and hospitality industries. Grants are awarded by competitive application to programs that produce academic achievement and increase student interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

The Family Fund helps provide emergency assistance to current or former American employees and their families. When someone from the American family suddenly faces a crisis, an unexpected situation that threatens their health and welfare, this public, nonprofit organization helps provide short-term relief. Financial assistance is based upon an application process that requires demonstrated need. Additionally, assistance may also be provided to national or international organizations to support relief efforts in communities served by American Airlines.
