Kimberly Gibbs

For Kimberly Gibbs, battling cancer was simply the beginning of a new life and a new way of thinking about life.

Diagnosed with ovarian cancer in July 2015, Kimberly refused to give up. In spite of the lengthy and intensive treatments she would face, Kimberly chose to use the opportunity to embrace life and live it to the fullest.

During her treatment and despite her illness, she threw herself a 50th birthday bash with friends and family who traveled from as far as San Francisco, Phoenix and Dallas to celebrate with her. “We had a rocking party to remind all of my friends that cancer is not a death sentence.” Says Kimberly. “To celebrate my day with so many people that are important to me was amazing — even though I was sick and bald.”

During her treatment, Kimberly received a huge outpouring of support. She received hundreds of cards and messages of encouragement. She gathered a close group of friends and family to form a support team. Together, they kept Kimberly active, eating and feeling good. Kimberly insists that laughter is the key to managing and recovering from her illness.

“You need to laugh, laugh and laugh,” says Kimberly. “Focus on today and what a great day it is.”

To others who are experiencing cancer, Kimberly recommends getting involved and meeting others who are going through the same thing. “There will be hard days, and no one knows what that’s like but another person who has been through it,” she says.
